What are the Abidjan Peace Talks?

“Peace Talks” is an event which aims to showcase inspirational stories of action for peace. Speakers came from diverse backgrounds, including mediators, business leaders from multinational corporations, former gang members from Central America, journalists, an Academy Award winning actor, young people and school children, particle physicist, civil society leaders, military, members of Parliaments, artists, as well as the 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations. To date there have been 12 editions of Peace Talks in 6 countries, 131 speakers, over 6,800 in person attendees and more than 131 million impressions on the event’s hashtags.

Through the ‘Abidjan Peace Talks’, Geneva Peace Talks, Interpeace, Indigo-Côte d’Ivoire and N’Zarama Center for Peacebuilding (NCP) aim to showcase inspirational stories of young Ivorians who are making extraordinary contributions to peace and security in Côte d’Ivoire, and to encourage more young people to become active agents of peace. Speakers will share their personal stories around the main theme of the event: “Youth Contributions towards Peacebuilding in Côte d’Ivoire”, and will be required to speak in their personal capacity and not represent an organization or political entity. They will be expected to answer in an honest, personal and authentic way to the question “What does peace mean to me and what do I do to promote peace?”

Specific objectives of the Abidjan Peace Talks include:

  • To raise awareness of the positive role played by young Ivorians in promoting peace by sharing inspirational stories of young people involved in violence prevention and peacebuilding throughout the country;
  • To inspire action in daily life and at national level;
  • To serve as a platform for good practices in peacebuilding and conflict management among young Ivorians;
  • To provide a space for national dialogue between youth and political decision-makers in Côte d’Ivoire about meaningful participation of young people in peace and security in Côte d’Ivoire;
  • To impact the youth in Côte d’Ivoire with ideas generated from the Peace Talks on the role of youth in violence prevention and peacebuilding in Côte d’Ivoire.

Format of the Abidjan Peace Talks

The Abidjan Peace Talks will feature 7 – 8 inspiring stories from 7 – 8 speakers.  Speakers will make their presentations in 8 minutes and the event will last approximately 2 hours (from 16h to 18h). 600 participants will be expected, including representatives from the civil society; local authorities; local media; NGOs; the international community; donors; students; youth leaders from different regions of Côte d’Ivoire; and young people from the different neighborhoods in Abidjan. There will be no questions or answers after the speakers’ testimonies. However, the public will be able to interact directly and informally with the speakers immediately after the end of all the speeches. Small dialogue spaces will be set up for this purpose.

The Abidjan Peace Talks will be recorded and the videos of the speakers will be accessible on this website. In order to bring the voices of the young speakers to a larger audience and maximize the real impact on the Ivorian Youth, projections in popular neighborhoods of Abidjan will be organized during the weeks after the event. The day before the Abidjan Peace Talks a separate event, the Forum des Jeunes, takes place. More information is available here.
