Biography

Jan Eliasson was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 July 2012. The Swedish diplomat has held various positions within the United Nations system, including as the first UN Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs and as President of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly. He was appointed Foreign Minister of Sweden in 2006 and has previously worked as State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Sweden’s Ambassador to the US and the United Nations.
